The brand-new £105 million NHS National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC), run by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, has unveiled the most comprehensive robotics suite in the NHS.

The pioneering robotics suite features cutting-edge technology from across Europe, including robots and devices which can be used when helping patients to walk again, relearn how to use their hands, and build function in specific parts of their body.

The NRC is a 70-bed, state-of-the-art specialist rehabilitation centre for NHS patients who have experienced a life-changing illness or injury and is co-located with the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) on the Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate (SHRE) near Loughborough.

We’re proud to share a major milestone for rehabilitation technology in the UK - the official opening of the pioneering Phoenix Suite at Montagu Hospital . This brand-new therapy suite represents a significant investment in advanced neurorehabilitation and marks an exciting step forward for patient care within the NHS.

Ectron is honoured to have played a key role in this incredible development, supplying a full range of innovative solutions to support recovery, independence, and improved outcomes for patients.

At the heart of the Phoenix Suite is the LEXO , the UK’s first installation of this groundbreaking gait training system within the NHS. The LEXO combines robotic-assisted movement with real-time feedback, allowing patients to retrain their gait patterns safely and effectively - a huge step forward for post-stroke and neurological rehabilitation.

Alongside the LEXO, we’ve also provided a comprehensive Tyrosolution setup, including devices such as Amadeo for hand rehabilitation and Omego Plus for cycling and stepping therapy. Together, these systems create a dynamic, gamified environment that motivates patients while offering clinicians precise, data-driven insights.

We are so pleased to see our Tecnobody Solution at the neuro-rehab outpatient centre in Neurotherapy Worx.

The centre, based near Wigan, started using the D-Wall at the beginning of the year and went on to include the Prokin 252, WalkerView, and Data Server devices.

Clinic owner, Sarah Wilkinson's experience with the advanced motion tracking, analysis, and therapy programs of the D-Wall has led her to adopt additional solutions, such as the Prokin 252 for balance and proprioception, and the Walker View for gait assessment and training.

This strategy is designed to motivate patients and supply valuable data to the physiotherapy team, potentially reducing recovery time.

Stoke Mandeville Hospital’s National Spinal Injuries Centre is one of the largest specialist spinal units in the world, and the pioneering rehabilitation work carried out there by Sir Ludwig Guttmann led to the development of the Paralympic Games , which we will get to enjoy on our screens from 28th August, 2024 in Paris.

In 1943, the government asked spinal injuries specialist Ludwig Guttmann to establish the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where he was appointed Director. He believed that sport was a major method of therapy for injured military personnel, particularly those with spinal cord injuries as he believed it would help them build up physical strength and self-respect. His work at Stoke Mandeville laid the foundation for what is now a celebrated international sporting event, showcasing the abilities and competitive spirit of athletes with disabilities.

After our first sale back in 2014, we teamed up with Ruth Peachment , who is a celebrated Occupational Therapy Clinical Specialist at Stoke Mandeville (see photos above). Together we worked on a project to help create the Phoenix Upper Limb Studio which was shortlisted for an ‘Acute Sector Innovation of the Year’ Award in 2021 and includes a complete Upper Limb Tyrosolution by Tyromotion (see below).

Robotic-assisted rehabilitation protocol for upper limb treatment in stroke: New Research Study

Researchers from IRCCS Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi ONLUS in Italy, evaluate the effectiveness of a customised robotic upper limb rehabilitation protocol for the treatment of stroke patients.

The study analysed clinical data from 81 patients with subacute stroke who underwent 30 sessions of upper limb robotic rehabilitation. Of these, 49 patients received treatment using the customised robotic protocol (experimental group), while 32 patients received standard robotic therapy without customised protocol (control group). The rehabilitation program included AMADEO ®, DIEGO ®, and PABLO ® by Tyromotion .

Results from the study revealed significant improvements in both groups in terms of upper limb motor function, strength, and activities of daily living. However, the experimental group, which received treatment with the customised robotic protocol, yielded greater recovery in upper limb motor function and strength compared to the control group.

The findings highlight the importance of customised treatment approaches in stroke rehabilitation. Tailored robotic therapy protocols hold the potential to further improve the effectiveness and consistency of robotic rehabilitation programs in the future.

In January this year, Neurotherapy Worx in Wigan took delivery of the D-Wall by TecnoBody. Neurotherapy Worx is a specialist team of Adult and Paediatric Therapists based in a fully accessible clinic in Appley Bridge. Neurotherapy Worx offers both clinic and home-based rehabilitation. Over the last two months Neurotherapy Worx have been integrating the D-Wall into their everyday clinic. This short article shares their experiences so far.

Has it been easy to integrate D-Wall within your everyday clinic practice?

The D-Wall has been easy to integrate into clinic. It has been used during initial assessments, integrated into treatment plans and formal reviews. It enables us to undertake specific assessments and see change over time in patients’ abilities.

How easy is the D-Wall to use with regards to patient set up?

The D-Wall is very quick to set up once you have created a profile with a client’s date of birth, weight and height recorded. However, it is also possible to try different activities with an adult client without creating a profile. If you spend time in the Monitor facility so that the client understands how their foot position, their upper body and centre of gravity impacts the D-wall, this makes using the other settings, exercises, games more effective during the assessment and treatment process.

How are you using D-Wall in clinic?

We are using the D-Wall in many different ways!

Therapy

·It is really useful for people with one sided weakness. They can visually see their alignment and work actively to try and correct this (previously we would verbally give feedback and facilitate).
Good for strengthening and gaming afterwards.
D-Wall is good at finding things we would not necessarily pick up on or see. It’s like an extra pair of eyes.
We are working with patients and adapting things all the time. Constantly adapting and adjusting the movements.
Can be used for a specific part of the session or for the whole treatment session.
Trunk control.
Balance – within and out of base of support.
Look at specific motor control of a specific limb; or address gross motor control.
Good to work on balance and trunk control whilst carrying out a more functional / meaningful activity.
Engaging children and adults in repetitive movements or using the less dominant limb.
Bilateral arm movements.
Improve cardiovascular system in a safe supported environment.
Muscle strengthening.
Use neglected limb.
With treadmill.
With parallel bars.
Using therapy ball for seated activities/games.

How are the therapists finding working with D-Wall?

The therapists are finding the D-Wall easy to use, quick to switch on and to set up. The D-Wall is versatile and can be used with different equipment during activities. It can take time to explore and try all different activities available, but Therapists enjoy the large collection of exercises on top of activities you can create yourself and multiple games. The games help to keep patients engaged and motivated.

How are the patients finding D-Wall?

Patients enjoy the activities.
Feel challenged.
Appreciate the direct visual feedback.

What do you like best about D-Wall?

The D-Wall is a real game-changer for helping people to work on their alignment and positioning and adapts to most patients. It is brilliant for assessment, movement, and motion analysis. We can use a variety of other equipment without compromising the function of the D-Wall for example, a treadmill, parallel bars, cushions, weights etc. There are a lot of different games some of which can be very challenging. It is good because there are different levels of games that can be easily adapted/adjusted to the patients’ needs and abilities. Easier for clients to engage with repetitive movements which aid recovery. With Case Managers are wanting clearer more objective data, and we can give them that now with the D-Wall.

We have been able to use the D-Wall with a wide range of patients including patients with brain injury, cerebral palsy, FND, MS, PD, metabolic conditions, stroke and spinal cord injury. The youngest we have successfully used D-Wall effectively was just 5 ½ years old.

Anything else you would like to add?

The D-Wall has been a fantastic addition to our clinic. We are continuing to learn about the many functions that it has but so far, it has been fantastic in terms of analysing movement and recording good objective data to help direct more specific, targeted treatment plans. We have found it particularly useful with people with one sided weakness and visual feedback on their position to be able to actively work and change their alignment.

The gaming function works well for a variety of people, and they generally become immersed in the game, which generally helps improve their dynamic movement/function.

We need to complete reports for some of our patients who have case managers, and we are now able to record more objective data to support our rehabilitation plans and to be able to record patient progress more effectively.

In April, the Ectron team attended TecnoBody's headquarters in Italy to take part in its International Sales Partners Meeting combined with TecnoBody's 30th Anniversary Celebrations

The focus of the week was the Health Hub concept, the result of the integration between TecnoBody systems and services, which was experienced first-hand visiting the Move Different Center of Kilometro Rosso. This was then followed by a visit to TecnoBody's headquarters, seeing the result of the applied research and development of TecnoBody's R&D over the last 3 years, in particular Homing and Smart Gravity 3D, with which its range is completed with the most compact and transportable system and of the most important one in terms of size.

Traditionally in the UK patients with a neurological disease, illness, injury received 45 mins to 1 hour of physiotherapy a day whilst in hospital. In the community patients often only received one hour every week/fortnight for a short period of time. Opinion leaders across the international rehabilitation community believed that this is not enough to optimise recovery and a higher-dose therapy makes it more likely for patients to reach their full potential.

Patients often have big goals but typically only make a small amount of progress which can be difficult for patients to see or feel. On Thursday 13th July Ectron held it's final workshop of the Fesia Roadshow at MOTIONrehab's Intensive Neurological Rehabilitation Centre in Leeds.

The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queens Square upgrades its AMADEO

ZeroG Gait and Balance System featured in the National News

The Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit in Glasgow has been featured in the news this week with the Zero G Gait and Balance system .

The story features Mr Louden who suffered a broken neck and back, alongside multiple serious leg injuries, in August 2020.

Prior to using ZeroG Gait and Balance System, Mr Louden said he felt that he

"put so much work in and didn't see any return, and I could feel my hope just draining away".

In September last year, Mr Louden started using ZeroG which supports him during therapy and automatically synchronises with his movements to help him walk and prevent falls.

"It's transformed my life and how I feel," Mr Louden said. "I've gone from hardly being able to move to being able to walk 20 metres non-stop on the bars. "

"My record on the ZeroG system is 57 metres."

Ectron is delighted to share the first pictures of the installation process of the ZeroG Gait and Balance System by Aretech at the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Centre in Glasgow.

The Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit is responsible for the acute and lifelong care of all adult patients in Scotland with traumatic and non-progressive spinal cord injury. The Unit was developed to provide specialised care for patients with spinal cord injury from throughout Scotland.

The modern care of spinal patients requires ready access to diagnostic and investigative techniques such as CT scan, MRI scan (including a research Siemens 7T MRI scanner) and neurophysiological assessments, together with on site availability of specialists in neurosurgery and neuroanaesthesia, orthopaedic surgery, general surgery and urological surgery.

The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital provides all essential services on campus and the National Spinal Injuries Unit is linked by corridor to the Institute of Neurological Sciences and the main hospital.

The ZeroG® Gait and Balance System protects patients from falls while providing dynamic body-weight support as patients practice walking, balance tasks, sit-to-stand and even stairs. ZeroG is mounted to an overhead track which means there are no barriers between the patient and therapist. With ZeroG, patients can begin rehabilitation in a safe, controlled environment.

ZeroG has advanced fall protection measures which monitor patient movements at 1,000 times per second. The intuitive touchscreen or wireless remote are used to operate the ZeroG. The motorised trolley automatically tracks patient movements up to 5 mph.

The investment of rehabilitation equipment has been made at Shropshire’s specialist orthopaedic hospital – thanks to funding from NHS Commissioners for Spinal Injuries.

Ectron is delighted to have worked with The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) and installing Tyromotion's DIEGO, AMADEO and MYRO. T he state-of-the-art upper limb rehabilitation equipment will be used to support spinal cord injury patients with their rehabilitation .

The RJAH has recent ly upgrade d the Hand and Upper Limb Unit at the Oswestry-based hospital . RJAH have embraced the use of modern technologies such as robotics, virtual reality, and gamification to provide improved patient outcomes.

Alison Mannion, Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist, said “We are all very excited to have the new equipment to use with our patients and we’re already beginning to think of ways it can help other departments and improve patient outcomes. “It can be used with patients of varying upper limb ability, and it will be a useful assessment and treatment tool to enhance our current rehabilitation. It gives biofeedback to patients so they can start to relearn patterns of movement with the aim to increase their functional independence.”

Mr Joy Chowdhury, Consultant in Spinal Injuries, said: “When we were offered the chance to receive this equipment for our patients, the whole team jumped at the opportunity. “On behalf of us all at the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries, I’d like to thank our NHS Commissioners (NHS England and Improvement) for funding these initiatives – it has allowed us to further support patient care through offering modern and innovative rehabilitation techniques.”

The new centre offers robotics and virtual reality for its intensive treatment programmes following neurological and catastrophic injury.

On Friday 15 ^th October, Chris Morden and Alex Jones from Ectron attended the launch event of The Rehab Physio’s brand-new clinic in Bromborough, Wirral. The new centre offers robotics and virtual reality for its intensive treatment programmes following neurological and catastrophic injury.

The new facility was officially opened by Paralympic Medallist Billy Bridge. This was followed by International Speaker, Research Scientist and President of the International Industry Society for Advanced Rehabilitation Technology (IISART) , Iris Jakob PhD presenting the latest research findings on intensive neurological rehabilitation with robotics.

People with neuro/complex injuries, solicitors, case managers, GP’s, Consultants and NHS commissioners were all invited to attend the open day, to help them develop a better understanding of the concept, and the importance of intensive treatment to ensure successful rehabilitation.

The Rehab Physio’s investment in ground-breaking rehabilitation technology with the complete upper and lower limb solutions by Tyromotion will enable the centre to offer truly intensive programmes of treatment. Historically, this has not always been possible due to a shortage of therapists and also the practical difficulties of physically achieving thousands of repetitions without the support of robots.

Christopher Wynne, The Rehab Physio says:

The Pheonix Upper Limb Studio at the National Spinal Injuries Cenre, Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

It’s timely that at the start of the Tokyo Paralympic Games the Pheonix Upper Limb Studio at the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital has been recognised by being shortlisted for an Acute Sector Innovation award.

The upper limb studio, which officially opened in May 2021, provides a form of therapy known as Activity Based Restorative Therapy (ABRT). ABRT involves the use of equipment to facilitate repetitive movement to improve a patient’s level of independence following spinal cord injury.

The team chose the complete Upper Limb Tyrosolution by Tyromotion to help facilitate repetitive movements which would not ordinarily by achieved through hands-on therapy alone.

Working within a therapeutic framework, the team at the National Spinal Injuries Centre has demonstrated the positive impact of intensive repetition in rehabilitation, and the overall impact on functional tasks such as feeding, drinking, return to driving, carrying out aspects of personal care, and returning to work.

The upper limb studio was shortlisted out of over 1000 entries submitted for this year’s HSJ Awards. The judging panel was made up of respected figures within the healthcare community, including Sir Bruce Keogh (Chair, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s FT); Marie Gabriel CBE (Chair, NHS Race and Health Observatory); and former HSJ Trust of the Year winners Ann Marr OBE (Chief Executive, St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals Trust) and Richard Mitchell (Chief Executive, Sherwood Forest Hospitals FT).

The official awards ceremony to announce the overall winners in each category will take place at Evolution, London on 18 November 2021.

D r. Craig DiTommaso

Dr. DiTommaso is the Medical Director of Post Acute Medical-Humble and Director of Early Career Physician Development at US Physiatry. He performs rehabilitation management, consultations, and chemodenervation for patients with spasticity, traumatic neurological injury including traumatic brain injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, or spinal cord injury. Dr. DiTommaso ascended to the medical director of inpatient rehabilitation for Baylor College of Medicine and served as an assistant professor. During his tenure with BCM, he was the medical director of Baylor St. Luke’s Rehab Services, Baylor St. Luke’s Rehab Center, and a primary attending on the TIRR Disorder of Consciousness program. Dr. DiTommaso also taught Brain Injury Medicine fellows, PM&R resident physicians, medical students, and physician assistant students. His research interest include prognosis after traumatic brain injury, headache management after brain injuries including concussions, and spasticity treatment.

Today the Ectron team are at Sense Ability Therapy in Devon installing a brand new Tyrostation by Tyromotion .

Sense Ability Therapy CIC is a community interest company based near Newton Abbot in Devon providing physiotherapy, rehabilitation and education to the adult community. Tees Neuro Physiotherapy incorporate the TYROSTATION by Tyromotion

Tees Neuro Physiotherapy recently purchased a new TYROSTATION by Tyromotion for its clinic in Billingham, near Middlesbrough.

Clinical Director, Victoria Fairhall, first became aware of Tyromotion devices through another clinic in the region who was using the devices at its clinics. Victoria was keen to offer her clients a more intensive, fun and motivating therapy and was keen on incorporating more neurological rehabilitation technology to achieve this.

Victoria said “Increasingly there is more and more literature pointing towards increasing dosage and intensity in rehabilitation to help patients to recovery quicker and achieve better outcomes. In addition to this, there is further evidence demonstrating that robotics in rehabilitation can help us to achieve this.”

Physiotherapists at Tees Neuro Physiotherapy tried a range of different upper limb technology but felt the devices were not quite ready for market and required some development to be ready for clinical settings to benefit patients and therapists. Consequently, they turned their attention to what Tyromotion could offer.

Having looked at all the Tyromotion devices they ultimately decided the Tyrostation (incorporating PABLO and TYMO ) would be an ideal starter device. Its versatility, offering both upper and lower limb assessment, reporting and therapy and its ability to be used by a wide range of clients appealed to Victoria and the team. The Tyrostation also offers games as part of the therapy which are fun and motivating for patients. Victoria as part of her research reached out to other clinics with the Tyrostation asking for their honest feedback on the device all of which was positive. Victoria along with Amanda Jackson from OT Rehab North East invited Ectron to come to Tees Neuro Physiotherapy to give the team a demonstration on the Tyrstation.

Victoria says:

“It was the demonstration that really convinced Amanda and I. We were converted. The Tyrostation is just so versatile. We can use the Tyrostation with all of our clients in so many different ways. It is very easy to use and navigate your way around”

Ectron introduced Tees Neuro Physiotherapy to Jack at Absolute Finance who was able to support with the finance process

Victoria says:

“Working with Jack at Absolute Finance made the whole process of purchasing the device so much easier. It saved me the time having to research bank loans and different financing options. Jack made the process much smoother and helped to take the worry out of things”

Once the Tyrsostation was installed Tees Neuro Physiotherapy’s younger clients were instantly drawn to the Tyrostation and wanted to use it. Some of the older clients were a little sceptical at first but have quickly taken to the Tyrostation and once they had a go, they too were converted!

Victoria says:

“The biggest thing we have seen so far is the Tyrostation is really useful for patients who are generally quite inattentive. Those patients automatically and instinctively begin to initiate movement”

Tees Neuro Physiotherapy have reported that they have been able to use the Tyrostation with both low level and high-level patients. One client with a spinal injury who had very little hand and arm function was able to benefit and progress from using the Tyrostation’s Pablo motion-sensors. Whereas another patient who was more able was able to use the Pablo to practice more fine motor skills and has now managed to return to her administration job”

The special design of the PABLO hand sensor makes it possible to measure the exerted force for pinch, lateral, three pint and interdigital grips as well as the arms movements. Additionally, Pablo can measure every kind of body movement including the head, arm, trunk and leg.

When asked whether Victoria would recommend the Tyrostation to other clinics who were looking to invest in technology, Victoria said

“Yes, I would definitely recommend the Tyrostation. If you are a small clinic the Tyrostation is a great device due to its versatility. The other thing we have found is that patients rather than book for just one-hour hands-on physiotherapy they want to add on an extra hour and spend that time with the Tyrostation”

Hobbs Rehabilitation announces launch of new Intensive Neurotherapy Centre in Bristol incorporating the complete upper and lower limb Tyrosolution by Tyromotion

T his week Hob bs Rehabilitation announced the launch of its brand new Intensive Neurotherapy Centre in Bristol. The clinic is opening following the success of Hobbs Intensive Upper Limb Service in Bristol and is expanding to new premises to now include a lower limb solution.

Hobbs Rehabilitation has chosen the complete Upper and Lower limb Tyrosolution by Tyromotion for its new centre which will be opening to patients next week on Monday 1 ^st February 2021.

The Intensive Neurotherapy Centre will be based at Eden Office Park in Pill, Bristol. The 2,000 square feet treatment centre incorporates a large open-plan gym equipped with conventional apparatus and technology including the whole body Tyrosolution. The centre also has two individual treatment rooms, a larger multifunctional conference and training suite, breakout and wait area and onsite car park.

National Spinal Injuries Centre Launches Upper Limb Studio

N ational Occupational Therapy week see the launch of The Phoenix Upper Limb Studio at the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital

Ectron is proud to share that the National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC) at Stoke Mandeville Hospital has launched it's Upper Limb Studio this week and it couldn't be more fitting as it is also National Occupational Therapy Week!

“The “Phoenix Studio” is the new upper limb rehabilitation project at the National Spinal Injuries Centre. The new therapy suite launched this week features Tyromotion's:

Amadeo - hand, fingers and thumb robotic rehabilitation
Diego - bi-lateral arm and shoulder robotic rehabilitation
Myro - interactive therapy surface
Pablo - hand-arm therapy and assessment device
Tymo - therapy board

The Buckingham Healthcare NHS Trust says:

The Trust is celebrating the launch of an upper limb studio within the National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC) at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. We are proud to announce that this facility is the first of its kind to be available within the NHS, and it is the first to focus specifically on the rehabilitation of the upper limb with spinal cord injured patients.

Rehabilitation is an essential part of the care patients within the NSIC receive. The upper limb studio provides a form of therapy that helps to impact on a patient’s quality of life by building the skills required for greater independence and achieving meaningful goals.

The Activity Based Restorative Therapy (ABRT) that the studio enables is an important and growing area of spinal cord injury research. ABRT involves the use of equipment to facilitate repetitive movement to improve a patient’s level of independence following spinal cord injury. This form of treatment originated through the work of Christopher Reeve (the American actor who played the role of ‘Superman’ and sustained a high level of spinal cord injury in 1995) and Dr John MacDonald and continues to be supported and promoted through the Reeve Foundation.

The treatment itself is based on activity dependent neural plasticity in which changes in the nervous system are driven by repetitive activation of the neuromuscular system above and below the level of injury. Motor activation and sensory stimulation are done to promote neural restoration.

Over the last eight years, the Occupational Therapy team at the NSIC has worked hard to create a database of ABRT equipment used in the treatment of people with spinal cord injury. Following the careful selection of the most appropriate equipment to suit the needs of specific NSIC patient groups, the team established an Activity Based Restorative Therapy Group. Over a three year period, working with small groups of patients within a therapeutic framework, the team demonstrated the positive impact of ABRT rehabilitation, and the overall impact on functional tasks such as feeding, drinking, return to driving, carrying out aspects of personal care, return to work etc.

Having proven its benefits, the Occupational Therapy team then set their sights on establishing a specific area within the NSIC where they could expand and develop ABRT further. It applied for charitable donations to fund the creation of a studio and visits to G e r m a n y a n d Tyromotion in Austria to identify appropriate equipment and gain an understanding of how the equipment is used in other clinical settings.

With the launch of the new studio, the Occupational Therapy team has set itself new goals and is developing the relationships and collaborations established through this process with commercial companies, organisations, academic institutions and charities, so it can contribute to clinical research and the development of equipment prototypes and design concepts and remain at the forefront of rehabilitation research for the benefit of its patients.

David Smith MBE, a two times world champion and London 2012 Paralympic Gold Medallist, who underwent a period of rehabilitation at the NSIC, attending the Upper Limb Restorative Therapy Group on a daily basis, said: "The OT upper limb group was amazing during my time at Stoke Mandeville. Not only did it provide me and the others in the group with a challenging programme of rehab, it gave me an enjoyable place to work hard, laugh and enjoy life all at the same time. This is crucial when going through such a massive change in life following a spinal cord injury and is something that’s often over looked - but not in the morning OT upper limb group! I was challenged every day with a combination of rehab approaches and established a great relationship with the staff and fellow patients which made the rehab process so much easier."

Ruth Peachment, Occupational Therapy Clinical Specialist at the NSIC, and passionate ABRT advocate, said: “I’m so proud that all the hard work by the occupational therapy team has paid off and we have realised our aim of an upper limb studio. I would like to thank all those who have supported us and our patients in this ambition over the years, with special thanks to Jojo Moyes, without whose support and considerable contribution this project would most likely not have been achieved. We’re now fully focused on the future and how we can work in partnership with patients, research bodies, design companies and manufacturers to further enhance the independence, personal achievement and personal wellbeing of those living with spinal cord injury.”

This is week Chris from Ectron and Shiva Jamwal delivered a PABLO and TYMO workshop at the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital

On Thursday 29th October , Chris from Ectron and Shiva Jamwal delivered a joint PABLO and TYMO workshop at The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital

The workshop was a interactive workshop held for Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants.

The therapists worked through a clinical reasoning process with a patient with a neurological condition. The patient was assessed and clinical goals identified. The patients were then assessed using either the PABLO or TYMO from Tyromotio n. The patients were then "treated" or received their therapy/training using the devices. This allowed the therapists to gain hands on experience and confidence in using the devices.

The course also evidenced how the visual feedback from the devices enables patients and therapists a better awareness of compensatory movements. The therapists also witnessed a patient who often struggled with pain during therapy become distracted from the pain and more motivated to engage in therapy using the visual feedback and games offered by PABLO and TYMO.

The PABLO will be part of the National Spinal Injuries Centre brand new upper limb studio due to be launched in the not too distant future.

ABOUT PABLO

The PABLO hand sensor is a real allrounder. It is a hand-arm therapy and assessment device in one. The PABLO provides training for all gripping forms and traces the strength of the hand and range of motion. Motion sensors can detect the range of motion of the limbs as well as the head and trunk. Thanks to the new ergonomic design of the PABLO system, both adults and children can use the system in an optimal way.

The PABLO hand sensors and motion sensors connect wirelessly via Bluetooth and provides an interactive movement with audiovisual feedback based on the cross-system software TyroS. Even small movement or force improvements become visible. The wireless PABLO hand sensor measures the various gripping patterns of the human hand and the resulting forces and displays these values as a trend. The extension and flexion force of the hand in the cylinder grip can be measured by built in sensors. Stoke Mandeville Hospital to Launch New Upper Limb Studio

Stoke Mandeville Hospital is a large National Health Service hospital in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. It is managed by Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

The hospital's National Spinal Injuries Centre is one of the largest specialist spinal units in the world, and the pioneering rehabilitation work carried out there by Sir Ludwig Guttmann led to the development of the Paralympic Games.

This week the Ectron team were at Stoke Mandeville hospital with the Neurological Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists to deliver training on their new MYRO from Tyromotion .

New Tyrostation Installed at The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital

Tyrostation for Upper and Lower Limb Rehabilitation.

Ectron was delighted to install the new Tyrostation incorporating the new Pablo motion sensors and Tymo therapy plate from Tyromotion at The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital today.

Back in 2014, The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital was one of the early UK adopters of the original Pablo and Tymo system for upper limb rehabilitation. The new Pablo system now enables therapists to use Pablo for gait assessment and therapy. The Tymo and Pablo also enables an advanced balance assessment.

Pablo's motion sensors can be attached anywhere on the body. In the image below the therapist is using the sensor on the head to practice posture and neck movements.

Ectron attend the 7th Annual International Distributors Partners Meeting at Tyromotion in Graz, Austria

Last week, the Ectron team attended Tyromotion's 7th Annual International Distributors Partners meeting at Tyromotion's Headquarters in Graz, Austria.

Sixty International Partners from over thirty countries come together for a few days each year to attend scientific/research lectures, learn about how Intensive Neurological Rehabilitation augmented with Robotics and Sensor based devices is being implemented around the world and share experiences in their markets.

Robotic Support Enables More Efficient Neurological Rehabilitation

New study from Italy identifies Tyromotion's AMADEO, DIEGO and PABLO best at meeting the clinical, organisational and sustainability needs as well as strategic objectives of rehabilitation centres.

Dr. Irene Aprile and the team from Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi (FDG), Italy conducted a research project on the effects of using robot-mediated group therapy to treat the upper limb globally. Chosen over various other devices, the Tyromotion AMADEO , DIEGO and PABLO were found to be best at meeting the clinical, organisational and sustainability needs as well as strategic objectives of rehabilitation centres. The team could show that the improvements in clinical functions of the upper limb were significant when using robotic group therapy compared to the conventional (1:1) approach.

The AMADEO, DIEGO and PABLO have shown to be among the most efficient robotic devices for upper limb rehabilitation.

Background

Rehabilitation programs are mainly focused on walking recovery, with insufficient attention being paid to the upper limb. Robot-assisted therapy is gaining increasing attention from clinicians and researchers, providing promising results for upper limb recovery. However, almost all publications have focused on the effect of using a single device and the use in a research setting rather than in clinical practice. Therefore, FDG aimed first, to describe an approach for identifying a set of devices to treat the upper limb globally, and second, to verify the use of the devices in clinical practice.

FDG aimed to identify a set of devices, that meet their clinical, organisational, sustainability needs as well as the strategic objectives of the institution.

The result of their systematic approach was to choose the AMADEO®, DIEGO® and PABLO® from Tyromotion

In total 10 rehabilitation devices were evaluated:

Evaluation criteria: e.g. product maturity, body segment treated, type of assistance provided, provides assessments, maximum level of impairment, customisable exercises ,preparation time, autonomous use by the patient, possibility to use the device in group therapy, number of clinicians involved in the treatment, scientific papers, cost of purchase and maintenance.

Robotic group therapy for upper limb rehabilitation

Robotic group therapy for upper limb rehabilitation was compared to the conventional (1:1) approach in 30 stroke patients.

Patients in both groups performed therapy for 45 min per day for 5 days per week and a total of 30 sessions (total of 22.5 hours over 6 weeks).

A ratio of one therapist to three (1:3) or four (1:4) patients was used, depending on the patients severity mix as well as the treating experts opinion.

During the 30 sessions program all 4 devices were used for each patient to treat the distal and proximal upper limb. Effective therapy time was optimised by using only one or two devices per patient and session.

All patients further received conventional treatment for balance, walking, and lower limb recovery.

Results from clinical practice

The identified devices allow to treat the upper limb globally (includingshoulder, elbow, wrist, andhand), and to arrange the rehabilitation area so that one physiotherapist can treat more than one patient at once.

After rehabilitation, only the robotic group showed significant improvements in clinical functions of the upper limb.

This pilot study has been followed by the introduction the devices in seven other FDG centres and a multi-centre RCT. Today, the devices are routinely used in these centres in clinical practice

Therapists from across the UK come together for Tyromotion Day.

On Saturday 21st September, Ectron was delighted to host UK’s first Tyromotion Day, held at MOTIONrehab’s Intensive Neurological Rehabilitation Centre.

Over 25 neurological rehabilitation professionals attended with neurological consultants and therapists from some of the UK’s leading Neurological Rehabilitation Centres. It was great to see both NHS and private therapists coming together, sharing their learning and passion for better patient outcomes through intensive neurological rehabilitation augmented by robotics and sensor based devices. The event also enabled health professionals/therapists the unique opportunity to see all the Tyromotion devices under one roof.

The programme included the latest news, research and developments from Tyromotion, led by Manuel Landeira-Marino, Tyromotion. The delegates were then introduced to the new PABLO gait, TYMO balance and pre-gait rehabilitation with OMEGO by Chris Morden from Ectron. Ruth Peachment from Stoke Mandeville Spinal Injuries Unit presented on Upper Limb Activity Based Restorative Therapy Studio, followed by Ali Gomes Da Silva, Hobbs Upper Limb Programme, Bristol. Effects of robotic-assisted gait training on the central vascular health of individuals with spinal cord injury: A pilot study

A new paper has been published, led by the physiology team from the University of Winchester's Department of Sport, Exercise and Health and supported by Hobbs Rehabilitation on the effects of robotic-assisted gait training.

The research showed improvements in vascular health of people with spinal cord injury following robotic-assisted exercise with the EksoGT from EksoBionics.

On Wednesday the 17th July, MOTIONrehab took delivery of the OMEGO the latest in a range of neurorehabilitation devices from T yromotion .

The team from Ectron and Tyromotion spent time with the specialist neurological physiotherapists at MOTIONrehab training them in the 'Robotic Gait Therapy' by OMEGO.

The OMEGO is a neurological rehabilitation device for patients with impaired functions of lower limbs and gait disorders.

Intensity-dependent clinical effects of an individualized technology-supported task-oriented upper limb training program in Multiple Sclerosis: A pilot randomized controlled trial

Impaired upper limb function may present bilaterally in MS

60% of people with MS report a diminished hand function in the first year after diagnosis. As the disease progresses, the number of patients increases considerably experiencing impaired upper limb function, that may present bilaterally in MS. To date, only a limited number of studies targeted specifically the upper limb in MS but indicating a clear potential for substantial upper limb improvements after rehabilitation.

Lamers et al. (2019) is the first study aiming to individualize the intensity of a task-oriented training program in MS.

Antigravity support

Initial task difficulty was determined by increasing or decreasing the difficulty by providing antigravity support or if needed downgrading the task. Antigravity support was preferred because it allowed training of the complete task in the preferred context.

Motor learning

The DIEGO® was used to facilitate the implementation of motor learning components such as ‘training with real life objects’ and ‘individualization of the training’, which can be important to guide the training and maintain patient motivation and involvement.

Uni- and bilateral assistance

The DIEGO® assisted people with MS, who required upper limb weight compensation during upper limb training till they were able to train unassisted.

The Ectron team are happy to have attended the 6th annual International Distributors Partner meeting at Tyromotion in Graz, Austria last week.

International partners from over 30 countries came together for a couple of days of clinical knowledge transfer, scientific guest lectures and experience exchange. Ectron were proud to take Sarah Daniel from MOTIONrehab who was invited by Tyromotion to speak and share her experience of launching the UK's first ever intensive neurological rehabilitation centre augmented with robotics and virtual reality.

Sarah shared how MOTIONrehab’s unique new concept was developed and the research that informed her decisions around implementing high-intensity rehabilitation, incorporating ‘hands-on’ therapy with the full TyroSolution and a Robotic Gait trainer and Balance trainer.

Additionally, Sarah shared with the Tyromotion team two case studies involving clients who significantly improved following attending MOTIONrehab ’s intensive neurological rehabilitation programme. Furthermore, Sarah shared how the clinic won an international business award for digital innovation from Google and The Financial Times, who recognised the innovation MOTIONrehab brought to the industry of Neurological Rehabilitation.

Whilst in Graz, the Ectron team was able to see the latest Tyromotion technology currently in development including LEXO Gait Trainer. Ectron is looking forward to bringing this leading technology to the UK market.

Tyromotion In Sheffield

Sheffield's Northern General Hospital Implements #tyrotherapy

The Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, is another NHS site that has invested in Tyrotherapy. The Neuro Rehab unit in the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Unit has installed the Tyrostation, including the new Pablo and Tymo sensor devices. The Therapy team, led by Yvonne Whitehill and Emma Anderson produced a plan to implement an upper limb service to help improve the outcomes of their neuro patients in the 14 bed ward. This helped them secure funding for the new devices which will provide new options to train in a more motivating and intense concept. The Pablo will be used primarily for assessing force and range of movement in the hand and arm, but also has sensors which can be attached to the head, trunk and legs to ensure higher quality of movement with less compensation. The Tymo will be used to train the posture, core strength and weight baring in the arms and legs. We wish the team and their patients all the best for the future and hope they enjoy working with Tyromotion.

Hobbs Rehabilitations highly anticipated Masterclass in Neuro Technology took place on the 10th and 11th October in association with ACPIN .

The event was attended by over 150 clinicians and professionals with a specialist interest in Neurological Rehabilitation Technology. MINT 18 featured the latest technology in neuro rehabilitation and the two days consisted of formal presentations from leading clinicians and researchers and three masterclass workshops, led by clinicians experienced in the use of the technology

Bristol rTMS Clinic to Open in July 2018

SmartTMS choses DuoMAG XT rTMS for it's latest new clinic.

This week SmartTMS announced the launch of it's new clinic in Bristol and have chosen DuoMAG XT rTMS for their latest clinic.

DuoMAG XT rTMS has been developed specifically for clinics and hospitals and is CE-Certfied for clinical use. The South West clinic is the second opening for Smart TMS during 2018, as the company opened a clinic in Manchester in May 2018. The Bristol establishment will make Smart TMS’s transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment more accessible for patients in the South West.

A spokesperson from Smart TMS explained:

"We've had interest and enquiries about rTMS treatment from patients all over the UK. The initial treatment programme does require daily sessions, so we are really keen to build up a network of accessible locations around the country, making it easier for all those wishing to try rTMS to find a convenient clinic for their treatment.

Some patients have been able to live close to a clinic from the duration of their treatment, but for most, having a location nearer home makes it more practical for their needs.

We're delighted to be expanding our UK network in the UK. The addition of a clinic in Bristol complements our other centres very well. We established our first rTMS clinic in London in 2015. In 2017, we opened a clinic in Birmingham and Dublin. This year we've already added Manchester and the Bristol centre opens up treatment for those based in the Cotswolds, South West and Wales.

Hobbs Rehabilitation take delivery of a new TYROSTATION with PABLO

Hobbs Rehabilitation choose the TYROSTATION to add to their neuro rehabilitation technology offering.

On Friday 9th June 2018, Hobbs Rehabilitation in Winchester took delivery of the TYROSTATION from the range of TYROMOTION devices.

Hobbs will now be able to offer their patients upper and lower extremity assessment, training and reports using PABLO. The PABLO will provide Hobbs patients training for all gripping forms (including fingers and thumb) along with measuring the strength of the hand and range of motion. Motion sensors can detect the range of motion of the limbs as well as the head and trunk. Thanks to the new ergonomic design of the PABLO system, both adults and children can use the system in an optimal way.

The PABLO hand sensors and motion sensors connect wirelessly via Bluetooth. PABLO provides an interactive movement with audiovisual feedback based on the cross-system software TYROS. Even small movement or force improvements become visible. This motivates the patient and results from each rehabilitation session are integrated in the database and therapy report.

On Thursday 3rd May 2018, the Ectron team attended MOTIONrehab’s Intensive Outpatient and Neurological Rehabilitation Centre industry launch event in Leeds.

The event was attended by over fifty case managers, solicitors, and healthcare professionals with a specialist interest in neurological rehabilitation. Attendees had the opportunity to meet with the MOTIONrehab team and ‘have a go’ on all the new neurological rehabilitation technology from Ectron by Tyromotion.

MOTIONrehab’s unique new concept offers patients specialist one to one hands-on therapy from experienced clinicians and uniquely, MOTIONrehab clients will also spend time training with robotics and virtual reality devices individually and groups using the complete TYROSOLUTION upper limb range of devices, incorporating PABLO , TYMO , AMADEO , DIEGO and MYRO . This will allow patients to practice high repetitions of movements which is critical to neuro-plasticity and the optimisation of outcomes.

Ectron is pleased to announce the Masterclass in Neuro Technology (MINT). Ectron have been working closely with Hobbs Rehabilitation over the last six months to create a first of it's kind Neuro Rehabilitation Technology CPD training event.

It is hoped that this event will benefit patients, therapists, hospitals, clinics and the industry alike. A big thank you to Hobbs Rehabilitation that ran one day trial event in March which was a great success. The main event will run for the first time this year over two days on October 10th and 11th 2018 at the Holiday Inn in Winchester.

This new event will be called Masterclass in Neuro Technology (MINT) - Successful Integration of Neurological Rehabilitation Technology into Clinical Practice. Clinicians will have the opportunity to learn how to maximise patients outcomes using neurological rehabilitation technology. They will also learn how to get the full benefit of their technology investment. MINT is a hands-on training event with real patient volunteers, providing a challenging and unstaged test of what the technology can deliver in the hands of users, not sales people.

The UK's first Intensive Outpatient and Residential Neurological Rehabilitation Centre augmented with robotics and virtual reality

On Tuesday 11th April 2018, MOTIONrehab took delivery of the TYROSOLUTION by TYROMOTION. MOTIONrehab based in Leeds is the UK’s first Intensive Outpatient & Residential* Neurological Rehabilitation Facility augmented by Robotics and Virtual Reality. The centre will include a range of upper and lower limb robotics and virtual reality technology. The MOTIONrehab centre will be the only location within Europe to combine these particular devices under one roof, giving the clinic International Reference Centre Status for treatment, teaching and research.

The new concept offers patients specialist one to one hands-on therapy from experienced and highly skilled clinicians. Uniquely, MOTIONrehab clients will also spend time training with the robotic and virtual reality devices individually and in groups. This allows patients to practice high repetitions of movements which is critical to neuro-plasticity and the optimisation of outcomes.

The team at Ectron believe that Tuesday was an important milestone for neurological rehabilitation in the UK. It might not be in everybody's reach yet and it might not, at first impressions be everybody's solution but Ectron believes that one day the industry will look back at this implementation as the start of when neurological rehabilitation began to change. Whilst recognising that a lot of work has been done by many people to develop technology as an aid to rehab it has primarily been used as part of the traditional service delivery. Technology has provided the means for mass practise and repetition, however MOTIONrehab is the first facility in the UK to offer high intensity rehabilitation programmes with specialist 'hands-on' therapy augmented with robotics and virtual reality. This means the investment in technology is being used to leverage and expand he skills of the clinicians and not replace them but boost productivity. In turn this will allow for a higher dose of therapy.

The PABLO Motionsensor is a precise joint assessment due to measurement modules that are attached to the body with loop straps of various sizes . Individual positioning of the Motionsensors enables a variety of therapies. So symmetric and asymmetric, bilateral and cooperative applications are possible.
The PABLO Multiball supports pronation and supination training as well as the flexion and extension of the wrist. Even at an early stage of rehabilitation, such as flaccid hemiparesis, the Multiball can be used for therapy of the upper extremities. To that end, the PABLO sensor handle is simply inserted into the PABLO Multiball. The hand is attached to the ball by means of a flexible strap system.
The PABLO Multiboard is used to guide and assist repetitive distal and proximal single- and multi-joint exercises. Even severely impaired patients can receive therapy with the Multiboard and learn to avoid compensations in movement from the get-go.

How To Beat Depression

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

In December 2015, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) approved rTMS (Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) as an effective and safe method of treating depression for patients in the UK. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a treatment which uses pulsing magnetic fields to activate brain centres associated with mood. The treatment has a number of advantages over traditional medication as it is non-invasive. It does not involve surgery, anesthesia or sedation and it does not have the side effects associated with antidepressants. rTMS has also been shown effective in treating migraine, post-natal depression and pain.

The guidelines issued by NICE have not specified or restricted the type of rTMS treatment, which means that practitioners can offer treatment using conventional rTMS – which takes around 40 minutes per session – and/or theta burst, which takes around 5 minutes.

Ectron are the UK exclusive distributors of Magventure's rTMS system known as Magvita. This is the only system that has been awarded a CE mark for clinical use.

Repetitive task training can help recovery after stroke - National Institute for Health Research.

On the 25th April 2017 the National Institute for Health Research published a report stating repetitive task training can help recovery after stroke.

Following a stroke, people who received repetitive task training showed greater improvements in performing functional tasks, such as picking up a cup, standing up and walking. These improvements were sustained for up to six months.

Disability following stroke is common, affecting around half of all stroke survivors. This NIHR-funded review of over thirty trials found that repetitive task training provided small gains in arm and leg function, balance and walking distance (about 35 metres).

We do not yet know the optimum number of sessions, or the ideal duration or intensity. However, it is a versatile and relatively easy intervention which can be delivered by physiotherapists/occupational therapists in groups, individually, in hospital, in the community or at home. Depending on the nature of the exercise, there is also potential for people to continue to practice on their own or with carer support.

This review shows that it can help people to improve functionality and mobility .

rTMS Service Launched at Queen Mary's Hospital in Kent

In January 2017 Oxleas NHS launched it's rTMS service for patients with a diagnosis of treatment resistant depression. This is a new treatment, included in the NICE guidelines in 2016, for both depression and migraine treatment. At this time, Oxleas NHS are able to provide this treatment for people with depression who are under their secondary mental health services and therefore residents of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich. The team have already seen some positive results in patients.

Oxleas NHS are able to provide both rTMS and ECT to patients out of borough who have funding in place (approved by a local CCG or referred from a Private Psychiatrist or medical insurance scheme). The services are based within new purpose-built premises in the Woodlands Unit at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup, Kent. The team is led by Dr Rafael Euba, ECT Consultant and an expert in delivering rTMS.

Researchers, Clinicians, and Academics from Maastricht University are offering a two-day clinical TMS certification workshop to be held in London, UK with a focus on the clinical applications of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). The course covers the basic physical and physiological principles of transcranial magnetic stimulation, presenting state of the art insights and explanations of the latest scientific literature.

The machinery is explained theoretically as well as practically, from the required hardware components to the administration of a TMS pulse to the neuronal responses in the brain. As TMS can be applied in different ways, using different so-called protocols which define the number, sequence, frequency, intensity, and burst-rate of pulses, participants gain a thorough understanding of the benefits and limitations of this wide range of applications. This discussion covers both classical and state of the art protocols, as well as the evidence for their efficacy, effect sizes, and domains of implementation. At the same time, participants gain hands-on experience with all the relevant tools and techniques.

After learning how to apply TMS theoretically, participants enjoy workshops in our actual TMS labs. Here they are instructed in the everyday operation of the machinery, and both administer and experience different stimulation protocols. They determine individual thresholds of excitability, and learn how to programme TMS machines. This provides them with all the tools to administer clinical TMS therapies such as for depression, anxiety, OCD, tinnitus, pathological pain, addiction, and rehabilitation. Treating Patients With Upper Limb Deficit: Integrating Research Into Practice

Ectron are proud to announce sponsorship of the 4th Annual Queen Square Upper Limb Neurorehabilitation Course - Treating Patients With Upper Limb Deficit: Integrating Research Into Practice on 30th June and 1st July 2016. The course was held at The UCLP Centre for Neurorehabilitation and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London with over one hundred healthcare professionals attending from both the public and private sectors from across the UK.

The two day course provided an overview of current research examining treatment and rehabilitation options for the neurological patient with upper limb deficit. The course assisted in the practical real life translation of scientific evidence into clinical practice. Delegates were given the opportunity to trial the latest technology from Tyromotion including the brand new device MYRO which was launched in June at Neuro Rehab Expo.

MYRO is an interactive therapy surface which can be used in a multitude of ways: the MYRO sensors allow everyday life motor training with real objects on a responsive surface. Myro reacts not only to motion but also to pressure. Ectron and Magventure were incredibly pleased with the turnout for the rTMS for Depression Treatment Workshop in London on Wednesday 8th June 2016. The workshop which was held at the The Royal College of Psychiatrists was attended by over thirty psychiatry and healthcare professionals representing both the public and private sectors from across the UK.

Mr. Alex Jones, Director of Ectron made opening remarks and Professor Alexander Sack, Functional Brain Stimulation and Neurocognitive Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience, Maastricht University, continued with an introduction to Transcranial Magenetic Stimulation for Depression treatment followed by a Q & A session.

Matthias Kienle then presented a practical "hands-on session" with the Magventure MagVita TMS Therapy® system. The only CE marked TMS system available in the UK.

Founder, David Ram will be speaking at the Neuro Rehab Expo in June 15th & 16th 2016

David Ram is an Austrian entrepreneur, robotics engineer and medical device designer. Born on the 29th of April, 1979 in Kitzbuehel, Austria, he graduated at Graz University of Technology in Robotics Engineering and participated in an exchange study at the University of Delft in Aerospace Engineering.

During his studies David was interested in the interdisciplinary design approach which led him to found a Student Team to participate in the Formula SAE. Motivated by this stimulating experience and inspired by the possibilities of robotics he decided to found Tyromotion , which is a world leader in rehabilitation robotics.

Within the last 9 years the interdisciplinary R&D at Tyromotion came up with several revolutionary new products to become the cutting edge of what is now called computer and robotic assisted therapy. 7 Ways the Amadeo Hand Robot Can Aid Stroke Recovery

1. Rehab for all phases of rehabilitation

Some technologies are only effective at certain stages of rehab, such as when the patientnhas some active movement in the fingers or wrist. The Amadeo has programs to provide therapy which is completely passive (no active movement), assisted when some movement is possible and fully interactive, for when movment needs to be refined and practiced.

2. Intensive

The robot has the ability to provide intensive therapy, hundreds of movments can be completed in a single session, upto 10 times the amount completed with existing devices and much greater than hands on therapy. This intensity increases the possibility of reconnecting neural pathways.

3. Fun

Rehab can be very boring and repetitve. This makes motivation to train even harder. By introducing simple therapy games with various difficulty levels, patients focus pay more attention. Young and Older patients can find their therapy is much more immersive.

4. Individual Fingers

The Amadeo does not only open and close the hand, you can control individual fingers. This becomes important as some fingers recover first and need to be controled or restricted to encourage the weaker ones.

5. Cognitive Training

The hand robot has a suite of therapy programs designed to support cognitive training while moving the hands.

6. Measurements

Its difficult to evaluate the hand but the amadeo has assessments for range of movement, force, tone and spasticity. All for the individual fingers

7. Reporting

This data provides the clinician and patients with reports to show progress and encourage training through motivation!

NICE Approval For rTMS Depression Treatment

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK has now approved rTMS (Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) as an effective and safe method of treating depression for patients in the UK.

NICE Approves rTMS for Depression

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a treatment which uses pulsing magnetic fields to activate brain centers associated with mood.

The treatment has a number of advantages over traditional medication as it is non-invasive. It does not involve surgery, anesthesia or sedation and it does not have the side effects associated with antidepressants.

rTMS has also been shown effective in treating migraine, post-natal depression and pain

Ectron are the UK exclusive distributors of Magventure's rTMS system known as Magvita . This is the only system that has been awarded a CE mark for clinical use.
